Analysis and discussion of Wright DNA test results:

Group 1: Gabriel Wright Derived Signature

This is a derived probable DNA signature for Gabriel Wright using the maximum parsimony method (fewest number of mutations required to explain a change) on group 2. It is possible for unlikely mutation sequences to occur, such as multiple mutations occurring in the same generation and thus obscuring the DNA signature of generations farther back than the one in which the mutation occurred. All methods for deriving DNA signatures are subject to uncertainty, but the maximum parsimony method reduces the possibility that a bias in the test results (many people tested from one branch of the family) unduly influences the derived DNA signature of the most recent common ancestor (MRCA). It is possible for such a bias to occur using the statistical mode method (the value that appears most often in a set of data) for deriving DNA signatures. For much more detailed explanations of the principles of deriving DNA signatures, the maximum parsimony method and the statistical mode method, see the following articles:

Maximum parsimony

Group 2: Gabriel Wright Descendants

All the descendants of Gabriel Wright, who have tested so far, match each other (albeit with two of them being at lower testing levels) and also match the two Flushing Wright descendants who have tested. The tests of the Oyster Bay Wright family descendants have enough differences to show my Gabriel Wright line is extremely unlikely to be closely related to the Flushing Wright family other than through the many intermarriages that occurred between the Oyster Bay and Flushing families. A specific connection to the Flushing Wright family has not yet been discovered, and research is ongoing. Upgrades of tests 317601 and 331084 to sixty-seven markers will eventually be done to help further verify the correct derived signature of Gabriel Wright.

Group 3: Wright Family Of Flushing, Long Island, New York Descendants

The test results of the Flushing Wright descendants and the Oyster Bay descendants show it is extremely unlikely these two lines were closely related other than through the many intermarriages which occurred between the two families due to the large number of markers that are different between DNA tests of known descendants of these two early families of Long Island, New York.

The two descendants of Jonathan Wright of Flushing, Long Island, New York, both have solid paper trails and clearly match each other. All the descendants of Gabriel Wright who have tested have extremely close matches to these two Flushing testers, so the Flushing Wright family looks to be the likely ancestral family for Gabriel Wright, although the specific connection has not yet been discovered.

Group 4: Thomas Smith Of Millstream, New Brunswick, Canada Descendant

While this tester has the surname of Smith, they are aware the test results show it is very likely that they are actually a descendant of the Wright family. During several successive censuses in New Brunswick, Canada, their ancestors had numerous Wright families living next door. According to the research they have done, as well as other Wright researchers they've exchanged information with, the conclusion is that origin of the Wright family in Millstream started with William Wright Sr., born 1740 in Westchester County, New York. William married Susannah Hunt, born circa 1743 in Westchester County, New York. They arrived in Canada with the Spring Fleet in 1783, and settled in Westfield Parish, Kings County, New Brunswick. William died February 27, 1785. A specific connection to the Flushing Wright family has not yet been discovered.

Group 5: William Wright Of Rome, Oneida County, New York

The results closely match the two Flushing Wright descendants who have tested, and it is very likely the tester is a descendant of this family. A specific connection to the Flushing Wright family has not yet been discovered, and research is ongoing.

Group 6: Wright Family Of Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York Descendants

The test results of the Oyster Bay Wright descendants and the Flushing descendants show it is extremely unlikely these two lines were closely related other than through the many intermarriages which occurred between the two families due to the large number of markers that are different between DNA tests of known descendants of these two early families of Long Island, New York.

Test 339737 has a very solid lineage to the Oyster Bay Wright family that is also listed in The Wright family of Oysterbay (sic), L.I. book by Howland Delano Perrine. Consequently, this test is serving as the benchmark for DNA comparisons of the Oyster Bay Wright line.

Test 235938 is the line of Diane E. Wright, who has done considerable research on her line and has long believed her line traces back to the Oyster Bay Wright family. The DNA match with test 339737 strongly supports this conclusion, although the specific father of her line's Capt. Peter Wright is still undergoing research to see if it can be proven to be Joseph Wright, as Diane's research has lead her to believe it may be. If you have connections to this line, please contact Diane and/or see her two articles in the Oyster Bay Enterprise Pilot (here and here).

Test 122898 is descended on paper from the Oyster Bay Wright family, but the DNA results do not support this connection. The test results raise doubt about Gideon and Hezekiah Wright (brothers who fought with the British in North Carolina during the Revolutionary War) being sons of John Wright (1704 - 1750, great grandson of Peter Wright of Oyster Bay). Significant research by Kay Haden (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~katy/wright/index.html) has also shown Gideon and Hezekiah Wright being attributed as sons of John Wright to likely be in error.

Group 7: Anthony Wright Of Bucks County, Pennsylvania Descendants

The two descendants of Anthony Wright of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, match each other, but clearly do not match the Flushing Wright descendants nor the Oyster Bay Wright descendants. While many family trees have attributed Anthony Wright as being a son of Gideon Wright I, and grandson of Peter Wright, of Oyster Bay, this seems to likely be in error based on the DNA results.

Group 8: Samuel B. Wright Of Rome, Oneida County, New York Descendant

Based on the information contained in a research summary of Samuel B. Wright, that I found on FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/photos/stories/2030248), this Wright line looks quite promising as a possible match to my Wright line. Although there is a difference of at least three markers between this test and the test of any of the Gabriel Wright descendants, this DNA test needs to be upgraded to more markers to be more certain if any connection exists between this line and my line, or any of the other Wright lines listed on this page.
